“As social animals—as people who need people—hearing is vital to our emotional and cognitive health. Thankfully, today’s hearing technologies can enable those of us with this great invisible disability to escape the deafness that caused Beethoven to lament living ‘like an exile’ and experiencing social encounters with ‘a hot terror.’”
Dr. David Myers - Internationally known psychologist, educator and author.

Now Hear This is a volunteer, nonprofit undertaking intended, as a public service,  to be a clearinghouse for information on  assistive listening systems and matters related to them.  There is no legal or financial connection between NHT and any manufacturers, sellers,  or installers of assistive listening devices and related peripherals.

                                                                                IT'S THE LAW

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that any public place of assembly that provides a public address system (PA) must also have an assistive listening system ( ALS). That ALS will broadcast a silent signal to receivers in hearing aids or an available device with earphones or a neckloop, to make the activity taking place sufficiently audible for people with hearing loss to participate.

Howard "Rocky Stone, the founder of the Hearing Loss Association of America, observed that people with hearing loss are often slow to deal with their "invisible disability" and that, "We could help ourselves by being more open to its (technologies) use and by, at least, trying out such products whenever we have an opportunity."

Auracast™ is a prime example of a new technology that Rocky said people with hearing loss should try.  It's the most exciting development in assistive listening since British inventor Joseph Poliakoff developed the telecoil and followed it with the hearing loop nearly 100 years ago. It offers features previously found only in WiFi Audio. It features elements previously found only in hearing loop systems, and offers them not just to a minority of hearing aid wearers, but to anyone with hearing loss. It's a technology that is already being used by audiophiles and techies and offers improved communication access both to people with hearing loss, and to those with normal hearing.

As the use of other assistive listening technologies is widespread and familiar to most with hearing loss,
this website is focused on Auracast, the just emerging new technology.
